What is the history of Nepean?
Nepean Township, originally Township D, was established in 1792 and was incorporated as a city on November 24, 1978. It amalgamated into the new City of Ottawa in 2001, and the name continues in common use for the area.
As of · Updated
The township originally included what is now central Ottawa west of the Rideau River. Nepean was named after Sir Evan Nepean, British Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department from 1782 to 1791, and a Nepean quarry provided the sandstone blocks used in the Parliament Buildings.
After Westboro was annexed by Ottawa in 1950, Nepean's centre moved to Bells Corners, and the urban area expanded in the 1950s and 1960s into places such as Centrepointe and Barrhaven.
